Le Tour 2011 – Carnage before the Storm

Halfway through the tour, about to hit the Pyrenees.
An overtaking French TV car swerved left to avoid a tree and took out Juan Antonio Flecha, who in turn brought down Johnny Hoogerland into a barbed wire fence. Both riders got back on their bikes and are still in the tour. Hoogerland trying to extricate himself:

Cleaned up for the KOM presentation. Afterwards at hospital: 33 stitches. Is that a braided barbed wire tattoo around his right ankle?!

While Hoogerland is continuing, in stage 11 there were 21 fewer riders than the 198 starters. Where are they?

Abandoned from fatigue.

Stage 10 DNS Alexandr Kolobnev (Rus) Katusha Team
Positive test for hydrochlorothiazide (HCT). Third doping positive for Katusha in recent years (2 for EPO in 2009). The russian national champion was asked to leave to “enable the Tour de France to continue in serenity”.

Stage 10 DNS Yaroslav Popovych (Ukr) Team RadioShack
Crashed twice in stage 5. Withdrawn after developing a fever.

Stage 9 DNF Wout Poels (Ned) Vacansoleil-DCM Pro Cycling Team
Abandoned after crashing.

Stage 9 DNF Pavel Brutt (Rus) Katusha Team
Abandoned after crashing.

Stage 9 DNF Alexandre Vinokourov (Kaz) Pro Team Astana
Broken femur. Was an XE 2010 team member. Sadly it is the Kazakh’s last Tour appearance.

Stage 9 DNF David Zabriskie (USA) Team Garmin-Cervelo
Broken wrist. Struggled briefly to continue before retiring.

Stage 9 DNF Frederik Willems (Bel) Omega Pharma-Lotto
Broken collar bone.

Stage 9 DNF Jurgen Van Den Broeck (Bel) Omega Pharma-Lotto
Broken shoulder blade, 3 broken ribs and a punctured lung. Amazingly, the Belgian attempted to continue riding before succumbing to the rain and being carted off to hospital.

Abandoned after crashing.

Broken collarbone. Strong GC contender in great form.

Abandoned after crashes on stage 5.

Broken collarbone in stage 5, but manage to finsh stage.

Abandoned tendonitis.

Stage 1 DNF Jurgen Van De Walle (Bel) Omega Pharma-Lotto
Abandoned from crash injuries stage 1.

The crashes have already started to decimate the GC field just as the Tour reaches the base of the Pyrenees. Time to make a first VXE doping adjustment: The VXE top 10, after stage 11:
