Stage 19 – Alpe D’Huez
OK, I got that one wrong too. Contador must be on the Growacet too, as he launches a suicidal attack on Col de Telegraphe after 15 km.
It finished with the iconic climb up Alpe D’Huez. But even more scary, it passed through the “Dutch corner”. Here there is an orange wall of Dutch fans that have spent a solid 72 hours drinking beer. Pandemonim.
The leader, Contador, passes through in a couple of seconds. Quick, what do you do?
This Dutch hipster shows him his underwear:
This guy tried to take a blood sample. Bertie battles his way through.
For his efforts Contador wins the red number for the “most combative rider” of the stage.
Ten Nam goes through the Dutch corner with a mock victory salute, and a “look: a new nose”
Cadel was magnificent. Held up with a mechanical at a crucial point, he doesn’t panic but calmly grinds his way back to the front.
At the end Frändy cannot put time into Cadel.
Cadel gave everything.
Is 57 seconds enough time for Andy to cover Cadel’s better time-trialling ability? I don’t think so. It’s in the bag for Cadel.
